No matter what the non profit’s specific mission and objectives may be, there are several underlying functions that need to be carried out to ensure their sustainability and growth, such as marketing, communication, fundraising, strategic planning, scouting volunteer recruitment, accounting, organizational development and many other capacity building tasks that these NGOs do not have the knowledge, experience or the time needed to perform them.

The activities that interns perform are as diverse writing, editing or translating reports, developing procedures, projects and plans, designing brochures, websites, messages and marketing pieces, researching and promoting via the Web, building databases, taking photos and videos, attending and facilitating meetings, interviewing, bookkeeping and budgeting, training or coaching, assessing, networking, performing SWOT analyses and endless others.

Following are examples of activities and tasks that may be performed by interns from different academic backgrounds:

Communication, Marketing, Advertising, Graphic Design, Journalism, Information Technology and systems: development of communication tools and adequate promotion for different types of non profits and social causes, knowledge transfer to local staff and volunteers on these subjects, strengthening of internal communication channels, etc.

Social Work, Social Sciences, Anthropology: identification of social issues where these NGOs develop their activities and propose actions to approach deal with and solve them.

Political Science, Economics and International Relations: developing ways of linking these small and mid sized no profits with spaces for national and international cooperation to enhance their access to resources of various natures which are essential for their operations.

Management, Administration, Human Resources, Marketing, Advertising, Public Relations, Law: development and implementation of management, HHRR, Marketing, PPRR or legal tools and models to strengthen the social integration of the NGOs and their relations with public or private institutions and improve the processes and mechanisms of the internal work of the particular organization.

Nursing, Nutritionist, Physical Education, Psychology, Psychiatry: survey, analysis and systematization of health parameters in the different fields, development of proposals in line with the results, implementation of prevention and education campaigns mainly on issues such as HIV, drug addiction, reproductive health and family violence.

Education, Languages, Linguistics, language teaching: most of the NGOs we support work with underprivileged children and the different fields of education are the topics in which greatest help of qualified interns is needed.

Art, Music, and Photography: showing and teaching disadvantaged children, youth and adults the different expressions of art as a means to communicate, strengthen their local identity and develop personal and collective creativity.

Environmental Studies: transferring knowledge in relation to the care of the environment and its specific practices as a vital contribution to the most vulnerable social sectors.

Architecture, Engineering: developing proposals for improvements or upgrading the infrastructure where the non profits operate, optimize the use of resources to improve their habitat, strengthening and/or improvement of production processes, among other activities.
