VOLUNTEER

Any knowledge, skill or talent can somehow help those who need it most. The AFOS foundation makes it possible for anyone to contribute to a good cause by tailoring programs to each individual’s skills, talents and interests. Our project coordinators work closely with volunteers and interns to make sure they are placed in a project that’s right for them and also to help them develop their ideas within these projects.

Argentina is world-known for its tango, soccer, passionate people and landscapes, but beyond these images that cross borders and captivate millions, there is another reality, another Argentina that desperately needs your help. You can be a part of uplifting this hidden Argentina while experiencing the local culture and improving your Spanish.

Is AFOS Foundation right for you?

• When considering volunteering with the AFOS foundation there are a few things you must keep in mind. The first is the importance of self-motivation and initiative. The foundation provides you with the tools you need to succeed in your project, but ultimately it is your responsibility to carry out the work in the field. Since you are placed in projects within other local NGOs, the foundation can only guide you through the basic steps and orientation, but only after you have personally experienced it will you be able to understand the complexity of the work that needs to be done.

• In the field of social work you must think critically and make your own judgments and decisions. You can always consult the project coordinators for advice on how to approach an issue, but the daily activities within your projects are carried by you and because every person is different, it is important to realize that what may work for someone else might not work for you and vice versa. Also, because you will be here on a voluntary basis the foundation will not demand more or less from you, so how much you do depends on you. The success of your work depends on how much thought and effort you put into your work.

• Another thing to keep in mind is that most of the local social NGOs we work with may have little structure. Some you may find it difficult to see not only how their efforts are making a change, but also the result of their work. It is important for volunteers to be patient and enthusiastic to learn and serve. Results are usually seen on the long run, long after volunteers have gone, and a change is usually made through an accumulation of work of many volunteers. Change is something that takes time and it’s important that you remain strong and do not become discouraged because every bit of help makes a difference and has a great value.

For individuals who are self-motivated, there is a lot of room for creativity and innovation. The foundation is open to new ideas and encourages you to develop your ideas.
